Upgrading Ubuntu Servers (Hardy to Intrepid)

Submitted by str on Wed, 12/17/2008 - 23:47

If you are using Hardy Server or any other older versions of Ubuntu Server, and you want to upgrade to Intrepid Server or any other future latest Ubuntu Server releases, here are the simple steps...

But before that, please take note that upgrade will not take place by default because 8.10 is not a Long Term Support (LTS) release.

Very important, be sure that you have all updates applied to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS before you upgrade to 8.10.

Here are now the steps:

Install update-manager-core:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
Edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set:
Prompt=normal
Start now the upgrade:
sudo do-release-upgrade
Just follow the on-screen instructions and have fun :)

amazingly i was doing my upgrade to my desktop and doing it using gui.

after couple of hours of downloading my screen freezes and i have no other option but to hard reboot the machine.

but now, with this simple guide - i'm able to upgrade my 8.04 desktop to 8.10!

so this guide is not only for servers, it also works with desktop.
